Competitive (aka 'Rep') Teams

Competitive Teams (aka ‘Rep’ teams) FAQ

When are hockey tryouts (aka 'rep' tryouts) for Victoria Reign Competitive teams at U13, U15 and U18?

Competitive team tryouts typically occur the weekend prior to the Labour Day long weekend, with some weekday ice times leading into that weekend (Stage 1) and some weekday ice times after that weekend (Stage 2). The weekend days may involve two ice times on both Saturday and Sunday.

Historically, Stage 1 of tryouts has been held:

Aug 23-25, 2019 (Archie Browning Sports Centre / Panorama Recreation Centre)

Aug 28-30, 2020 (Archie Browning Sports Centre)

Aug 27-29, 2021 (Archie Browning Sports Centre)

Aug 26-28, 2022 (Archie Browning Sports Centre)

Aug 25-27, 2023 (Archie Browning Sports Centre)

Aug 23-25, 2024 (SEAPARC Recreation Centre)

Aug 22-24, 2025 (Wurtele Arena - Naden Athletic Complex)

Stage 2 is held after Stage 1, but before Labour Day weekend.

NOTE: Players must participate in the tryouts to be eligible to play on CRFMHA Competitive teams.

Does CRFMHA host multiple Competitive teams in any Division?

When supported by Competitive and Recreational registration numbers, CRFMHA may choose to host multiple Competitive teams in one or more divisions, with approval from the appropriate governing body (if necessary). Multiple Competitive teams will only be declared if registration numbers and the overall skill level can support them. A final decision will be made at the conclusion of Phase 1 of Competitive tryouts.

Who do Competitive teams play?

Competitive teams play a series of games within the District (i.e. on Vancouver Island) against the other female Competitive team or teams. Additionally, there is a structured program called ‘Interlock’ that facilitates Reign teams travelling to the Lower Mainland to play a weekend series of games versus teams from several different female MHAs. Those mainland teams also travel to Vancouver Island to play games throughout the season. Competitive teams travel to three to five tournaments per year. In selected situations, there may be the opportunity for Reign teams to play against carefully selected co-ed opponents.

What does a typical season look like?

Competitive teams typically have two full-ice practices per week and one to two games each weekend. Teams will travel at least twice each season up Island to play the North Island Impact, and twice to the Lower Mainland, typically in September and January, to play Interlock games against competitive female teams. These Interlock games in the Lower Mainland involve a condensed schedule with three or four games in one weekend. Additionally, Competitive teams can also be expected to attend three to five out-of-town tournaments over the course of the season. However, this may vary from season to season and is dependent on team goals and fundraising. Additional travel may include to the BC Hockey Championships in March if the team qualifies. Our Competitive teams typically play 50 - 70 games per season.

What is the expected level of commitment?

Choosing to play Competitive hockey demands a substantially higher level of commitment, not just from the player, but also from the entire family. This high level of commitment is necessary to ensure fairness to the coaching staff and teammates who are equally dedicated. The success of the entire program relies on the combined dedication and commitment of everyone involved, including coaches, parents, and players.

By accepting a spot on a CRFMHA Competitive team, players are expected to make hockey their priority sport for the season. As such, players will be required to participate in all team functions and commit to the team’s schedule including dryland training, practices, games, and tournaments unless there are extenuating circumstances such as illness or injury. Missing scheduled team events not only hurts a player’s own development, but that of the whole team. Parents are expected to encourage and support the commitments their children have made as players.

Beginning in 2025, CRFMHA will introduce a commitment letter such that players and parents selected to a Competitive team will be required to endorse their commitment at the start of the season.

What is the deadline to register for Competitive hockey tryouts?

July 20
